How to Play Mods

Visit the Steam Workshop for Sentinels of the Multiverse and click Subscribe on the mods you are interested in trying out. They will be automatically downloaded and installed by Steam.

In Sentinels, mod content will be available to play in the New Game screen. To see details of the content similar to the Multiverse screen, click the Workshop button on the main menu, select a mod, then click Show All Content.

You can play online multiplayer games with mods, but only with other players on Steam (not on mobile). When you create a game and a friend joins, they will be prompted to install or update any mods as needed.

Achievements (except for Infection) and variant unlocks are disabled while playing games that include mod content.

Mods are not available on mobile (iOS or Android). In the future we would like to bring successful mods to mobile as DLC, if it’s feasible.

How to Create a Mod

So you want to add your own heroes, villains, and environments to Sentinels - that’s awesome! We have prepared a lot of documentation and guides to help you on your way.

All mods posted to our Steam Workshop are subject to our SotM Steam Workshop Policies and the Steam Workshop Legal Agreement.

We currently support mods that add the following kind of content to the game:

  • Heroes

  • Villains (classic or team)

  • Environments

  • Variants (of official characters, your mod’s characters, or other mods’ characters)

The very first step is usually to create your cards & decks on paper and play test them a bunch, and get to the point where you’re happy with how they play. Check out these resources for getting started:

Once you have your content written and ready, it’s time to program the digital adaptation. You will need to have at least a basic understanding of computer programming. Knowledge of C# or other .NET development at an intermediate level is highly recommended. Find all of the details in the official Engine Documentation.

Sentinels wouldn’t be Sentinels without the visual appeal of comic books, and so we encourage you to include original artwork for cards and characters in your mod. We also support loading your original environment backgrounds, music, and other resources. All of the details are provided in our Resource Guidelines documentation.

To put it all together, you’ll need to package up your mod, test it out locally, and then upload it to Steam Workshop. And as with all software development - test, fix, rinse, and repeat! Learn how to do that with the Packaging Guide.

We will continue to improve support for mods by fixing bugs, expanding documentation, and adding new features for mod authors. Visit our Trello board to see what we’re up to.
